On a Shoestring: DIY Air Plant Holder

February 16, 2017

I’m collaborating with Amy over at Amy and Angie for On A Shoestring: a series of posts to re-imagine how we dress, decorate, dine, and more all on a shoestring budget. We’re on a mission to show you that it doesn’t take a Rockefeller-sized closet (or house) and budget to have a good life!

Today, Amy and I are DIYing decor. I’ve been seeing those cute geometric terrariums all over. You know the ones I’m talking about. They’re usually diamond-shaped, either have glass on their sides or they’re completely open, and typically in a brass/gold finish. Oh, and they’re like $25. For a table trinket.

No, thank you. I can make that instead (Famous Last Words of a Pinterest Project).

(Speaking of “I can make that instead,” you have to see this coat rack that Amy made for $10. She has an awesome tip for finding “free” wood!)

This DIY is truly a shoestring project. If you can break a penny, you can make this geometric air plant holder.

This air plant holder is so easy to make! It's just toothpicks, glue, and paint. It's an awesome, quick DIY!

All you really need are toothpicks and a glue gun; I added some paint as well. Side note: I can’t wait for sunnier/less windy weather so I can spray paint again. The ventilation in my garage is less than ideal.

Bonus points if your Martha Stewart paint also came from Pat Catan’s clearance section.

This air plant holder is so easy to make! It's just toothpicks, glue, and paint. It's an awesome, quick DIY!

I started by laying out the toothpicks in the design I wanted. For the base, I placed the tiny ends against the fat ends to form a triangle. Next, I built up the pyramid with the fat ends on the bottom and the tiny ends coming to a point.

For a hanging planter, I added a second point to the other side. You can keep building it out to make it more gem-like – there’s no wrong or right way to do this.

Then, I painted and styled with my air plant. You don’t even need to paint it, but I added a some color to one or two of the sides to carry out the geometric look.

Here’s a warning about the glue: a little dab of glue is all you need – you’re just attaching toothpicks together, after all. They aren’t really that heavy-duty. My gluing got away from me just a bit. Painting the whole thing would cover that up. Since my glue gun tends to leak/drip, I just stuck the end of the toothpick in the drip and tried to wipe off the excess. Even if you failed at Glue Gunning 101, you and Lady Gaga can do this.

I feel like I cheated, it was that easy.

Caring for an air plant is super easy, too.

It really doesn’t need much attention. Because it gets its moisture from the air, though, it does need a little more TLC when the weather is dry.

When that happens, I soak my air plant in a cup of water for about an hour once a week. Place it in the water upside down and make sure the plant is submerged. When you remove it, dry it upside down. Water that sits in the plant can cause it to rot.

If it’s relatively humid, you can get away with spritzing it with a fine mist when it looks thirsty (mine right now needs to be watered – it’s looking a little ashy), but keep an eye out for warning signs.

How can you read the warning signs? Garden Therapy has a great how-to guide for reviving sad air plants. (I also have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to gardening and plants. I kill (almost) every succulent I bring into my house; I don’t know about you, but I need all the help I can get.

Do you have air plants? Where do they live?

Sunday Lately, 111

February 12, 2017

Sunday Lately is a weekly link up brought to you by the Blogger Tribe. Link up and see what's been happening lately!

Sunday Lately is a weekly linkup hosted by the Blogger Tribe, which is fearlessly led by Katy (Wild and Wanderful) and myself. We e-hangout every Sunday, sharing a small glimpse into the past week of life in our own worlds. We’d love if you could join us!

This week’s themes: Fighting, Relaxing, Daydreaming, Delivering, Amusing.

Fighting

I’ve been fighting the urge to sleep all the time. It’s all I want to do anymore. I believe I’m closely related to bears.

Relaxing

I have had way too much self-care this week. I feel like I got done what I needed to, but nothing above and beyond. Isn’t that such a crappy feeling?

Daydreaming

Warmer weather came around this week, but it also brought cold and snow. As much as I dislike snow, I’m daydreaming of a good snowstorm (not too bad, just enough to keep me in for the weekend) so I have an excuse to truly do nothing but eat ramen noodles and watch Gilmore Girls.

Delivering

Good news? A puppy? I do need to send Betty the Llama off to Katy. I’ve been horribly behind.

Amusing

I’ve been trying to do FB live videos (because I’m a content marketer, I need to actually do what I’m recommending to my clients.) It’s been amusing, but not super rewarding. Watch my stuff. Make me feel like someone cares!

Sunday Lately, 110

February 5, 2017

Sunday Lately is a weekly link up brought to you by the Blogger Tribe. Link up and see what's been happening lately!

Sunday Lately is a weekly linkup hosted by the Blogger Tribe, which is fearlessly led by Katy (Wild and Wanderful) and myself. We e-hangout every Sunday, sharing a small glimpse into the past week of life in our own worlds. We’d love if you could join us!

This week’s themes: Procrastinating, Hiding, Imagining, Sharing, Praising.

Procrastinating

Ironically, I procrastinated writing this until Sunday morning (usually I’ll do it a day ahead so I can relax in the morning). So this will be short and sweet.

Hiding

I don’t think I’ve been needing to hide anything. I don’t live with anyone, so no presents have to be stashed under the bed or anything. I guess if anything, I’ve been shoving things in closets instead of cleaning and actually getting rid of things, so you could say I’ve been hiding clutter.

Imagining

Warmer days. It was bright and sunny yesterday and I felt so much better than I have in past gray days. Sadly, knowing Pittsburgh, there will be one 65 degree day at the end of February, a little in April, then nothing until late May. And the rest of the days will be cold.

I had to buy flowers the other day just to brighten things up.

Sharing

Yesterday, I shared an ice cream sandwich with two friends. We didn’t have a way to cut it and plastic utensils just didn’t cut it. So we passed it back and forth. (Anyone watch How I Met Your Mother? We passed it around like a sandwich.)

Praising

This wonderful community! I’m so thrilled that Katy asked me to be a part of the Sunday Lately leaders last year and it’s just exploded into this group of smart, driven, interesting women.

The Mystery of Faith

January 31, 2017

Faith. It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. An entire morning of journaling was devoted to it. It’s a tricky subject because everyone has their own definition of it. And everyone has their own idea of what it entails. But we all have an idea of it and can probably generally agree on a definition, though how it manifests itself is a mystery and as unique as the person embodying the idea.

You can’t hold it, but you can feel it. You can’t see it, but you can tell when it’s there. You trust your intuition and what others tell you and accept there’s this concept out there keeping you hopeful and moving forward.

Think about it, all the “faith” phrases are hopeful: in good faith, a leap of faith, keeping the faith. There’s still that element of not knowing the outcome, but you trust and proceed anyway.

It seems like the people who have unconditional faith, that there is something good out there guiding us and making sure no harm befalls us, do the most good and have a more positive path to walk.

They don’t seem to be worried because they give their troubles to someone else. It isn’t that they just hand all their worries over to the Universe and say, “Okay, your move,” it’s just the opposite. Those people are doing more with their lives. They’re living bigger and pushing further. They trust in their belief so much, they can make bold moves.

Notice I’ve been using the third person. I’ve been struggling with faith. I’ll have a day when I try to be open and accept graciously what comes to me. And other days I completely shut down and throw myself into a loop of extreme doubt in everything I’ve believed. Clearly something is out of alignment. In the meantime, faith is something to hold on to a bit stronger.

How do you keep the faith in your life?

It's hard to keep the faith, especially when you're having a downward vibration kind of day. What do you do to keep the faith alive for you? Really interesting perspective!

Sunday Lately, 109

January 29, 2017

Sunday Lately is a weekly link up brought to you by the Blogger Tribe. Link up and see what's been happening lately!

Sunday Lately is a weekly linkup hosted by the Blogger Tribe, which is fearlessly led by Katy (Wild and Wanderful) and myself. We e-hangout every Sunday, sharing a small glimpse into the past week of life in our own worlds. We’d love if you could join us!

This week’s themes: Writing, Quitting, Fixing, Celebrating, Updating.

Writing

I wish I could say I’ve been writing blog posts, but that’s been kind of slow going recently. I have been working on a new Blogger Tribe website, which Katy and I hinted at this week, so that counts as writing, right?

Quitting

Hm, there isn’t much that I’m quitting. I guess you could say I’m trying to quit making myself seem small and insignificant all the time, especially around people that seem like they’re busier/more important/better than I am.

Fixing

Another one that’s tough. And I picked these prompts! I haven’t been fixing much around the house since it’s really cold and most projects require being outside. I do have an On a Shoestring post coming up with some creating of things, so I guess that’s kind of fixing (and hopefully leaves y’all with a cliffhanger!)

Celebrating

Making strides with the Blogger Tribe group! Katy and I met this past Tuesday to discuss some projects, again that we hinted about in the group via Facebook Live, and we think they’re going to be awesome, so I’m all kinds of excited to see where we can take this.

Updating

Last week, I needed to change the energy in my office, so I moved some furniture and updated some storage things. Hopefully it brings the good vibes in!
