You’re never too old to be considerate

February 25, 2015

Today’s post is brought to you by #HashtagHumpday and some genuinely annoying kids from last week.

We're ranting about consideration in today's #HashtagHumpday link up post!

So the other day I was at Starbucks with Jonathan.  There was a small child to my left with his parent and a woman to my right (by herself).  #WhoBuysTheirFiveYearOldAnythingFromStarbucks?

I went to put my cup down in between the two so I could get some milk.  I set my cup down, took the lid off, and the kid (#ClearlyNotPayingAttentionToTheWorld) bumped me so my coffee spilled all over my hand and the counter.

This is the best part.  Are you ready for it?  #WaitForIt

The father looked at the kid, looked at me, and said, “Okay, let’s go now.” #AreYouKiddingMe?!

I am so sick of this self-centric culture we are living in.  I understand that a small child my not know what he’s doing or be paying attention to the world around him, but the job of the parent is to teach your child to pay attention to the world around him.

Something similar happened later that day.  We were leaving an area where there were many kids (and parental supervisors) were putting on socks and shoes.  And the kids were just sitting in the middle of the walkway area.

Are you surprised that these people aren’t watching out for their kids?  If I tripped and hurt one of their kids, it would be my fault instead of the parents for not keeping them safely out of the way of a busy area.

Seems like they could be a little more concerned for their kids’ well being here, don’t you?  If the job of the parent in example one is to teach their child to pay attention, it seems like the lesson here is to pay attention to the safety of your kids.

I was lucky to have parents that didn’t raise me to be a self-centered brat.  If I stopped in the middle of an entryway, I was told to move.  If I bumped in to someone, I was told to excuse myself.  If I was walking in a public area, I stayed to the right rather than taking up an entire hallway.

It is absolutely mind blowing to me that some people are so passive with their children.  They are shaping minds.  Minds that we all have to live with.  It would be a much nicer place to live if we were considerate of others.  And we could teach that to the future generations.

Sure, I understand that we all have to watch out for ourselves.  If we don’t have our best interest in mind, who will?  I get that.  But there’s nothing wrong with being polite and saying excuse me.

I just can’t believe that someone would basically allow their children to spill coffee all over someone and then #WALKAWAY?!?

Maybe I’m getting older and a few years ago this wouldn’t have bothered me.  Or maybe this egotistical attitude is compounding more and more.  Whatever it is, I’m tired of it.

All I know is that this wouldn’t have been such a problem when I was younger.  It definitely wouldn’t have been a problem when my parents were younger.  Going back even further, still not a problem.  Where do you think we learned how to be polite?  #DingDinDinggg: from our parents.

I’d love to just sit down in the middle of the floor and refuse to move, but life isn’t that way.  We all have to get a long with each other, so can’t we make it a little easier on ourselves?

So that was my rant for this week.  What about you?

I’m linking up with Life With Lolo and Genuinely Lauren to air some grievances for #HashtagHumpday.

What’s in my makeup bag – skincare

February 23, 2015

I love watching videos on YouTube where you get a peek inside someone’s makeup collection: how they store it, what their must-have items are, etc.  I have amassed quite a collection, but there are some things that I use every day.  It is ridiculously hard not to go on and on about my most loved products.  Heads up guys, this one isn’t for you (sorry, Dad).

Because I do reach for a lot every day, so I thought I’d break it down by category.  Today is the base layer: skincare.  It’s gonna look like it’s sponsored by Philosophy, but it isn’t I promise.

There are so many good skin care products, it's hard to know what's good. Check out these skin care staples!

Before we get in to it, let me tell y’all a little about my skin.  It’s pretty oily.  If diners run out of grease in the summer, they just come find me because I’m like a walking oil slick.  You may think that the winter is my skin’s time to shine, but no.  It gets patchy dryness, which I moisturize, and then break out because of the heavy moisturizer.  So I use drying treatments and we begin again.

I think I finally broke the cycle this year.  I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older or I’m using better products or I’m eating right or…who knows.  Some of these skincare products I’ve used for a long time, others are recent discoveries, but all of them have done wonders for my skin right now.

Philosophy Purity Made Simple and Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash

I use a combo of Philosophy Purity Made Simple and The Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash.  Usually I’ll use the exfoliant in the shower in the morning and Purity at night, but I also will mix the two together if I need a little extra somethin’-somethin’.

I will use Purity Made Simple at night with my Clarisonic to really get everything off.

Philosophy makes the best skin care products! Paird with my Clarisonic and it's heaven. The Triple Acid Peel Pads are a holy grail.

Philosophy The Microdelivery Triple-Acid Brightening Peel

I’ve talked about these before.  I’m so in love with them for a little extra oomph in my skincare routine.  I use them once a week to brighten and even my skin tone.  Used in conjunction with Yes To Grapefruit Dark Spot Correcting Serum, and the acne scars I always battle are fading away nicely.

Philosophy Hope in a Jar Moisturizer

I never tried this before I found a kit on QVC with this and some other products that I’ve wanted to try.  This moisturizer is light and has AHAs so you get a little exfoliation at night (when I use this).  A little goes a long way.

I’ve also used and loved Philosophy Take a Deep Breath moisturizer.  It’s a light-weight gel that is so soothing.  It feels like you’re splashing water on your skin.  Love it for the summer.

They have a version with SPF, but I have not tried that.  I was going to and then I discovered…..

Jack Black Double-Duty Face Moisturizer

Okay, I have to give it up to Jonathan for this one.  I’ve been mentioning skin troubles on and off and he’s always said that I should use what he does.  Well, I have a lifetime supply of Purity Made Simple (thanks QVC super size auto-delivery!) but I was getting towards the end of my supply of Hope in a Jar moisturizer.  So I tried this.

Even though it’s “formulated for a man’s skin,” my skin is in love.  It sinks in quickly, feels amazing, and the SPF in it doesn’t get greasy or heavy.  It also is unscented and doesn’t irritate my eyes if I get it too close.  All wins in my book.

 Acne treatments

I know that treatments don’t help hormonal acne very much, but I still like to try to prevent things that may be more environmental.  I used Clean and Clear Persa-gel 10 (among other high end and drugstore treatments) and then I discovered the Target generic knock-off and it does the same thing.  I use this all over, especially in the summer.

If I need to spot-treat, I reach for Origins Super Spot Remover.  This. is. amazing.  I picked this up in college after a friend recommended it to me and holy balls, is it good stuff.  Dab it on at night and wake up with a greatly-reduced (sometimes entirely gone) spot.

Peter Thomas Roth Laser-Free Regenerator Moisturizing Gel-Cream

This is a sample that I have rediscovered and loved.  I use it at night and I’m pretty sure this in tandem with the Jack Black moisturizer is how my skin has escaped dry patches during this recent cold streak.

This is totally different than any moisturizer I have used.  It says it’s a gel, but it has that “silicone” feel when you’re applying it.  Y’know, it gives your skin that slip that you typically get with primers.  I am really loving this sample, which is a shame because it’s expensive stuff!

Philosophy Hope in a Tube

Also in the Hope in a Jar line is Hope in a Tube.  It’s a great eye cream.  Very thick and heavy, though I wish it was as smoothing as they say.  I sleep with my face smushed into a pillow and I’m convinced that is why I need to use a heavy-duty eye cream. I also wear contacts so I’m tugging at delicate skin almost every day when I put them in.

I wish I had something that would stick with me more throughout the day.  I feel like by mid-morning, my under eye area looks dry and crepe-y.  Do you have any recommendations for good eye creams?

GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment

I’ve mentioned this mask before, so I’ll try to keep this short.  I was so upset when I didn’t use this all up when I discovered it had dried out on me.  I ration this stuff because it’s expensive, but so worth it.  When you feel your skin needs a good deep clean, this is what you need to turn to.

I’ve also been loving Bliss Steep Clean mask for a once-a-week skin vacuuming, but it’s totally different than the GlamGlow mask.  The GG mask is a clay mask that you can see sucking out the gunk.  The Bliss mask is more of an enzyme peel.  Still good, but in a different way.

Very favorite skin care products..Clarisonic, Jack Black, Yes To, Origins, Peter Thomas Roth, Up and Up, and Bliss

So those are the skincare products in my makeup bag that I reach for every day.  I know I seem super-high maintenance now, but a lot goes into looking this good (joke! That’s a joke guys).

What do you reach for on a daily basis when it comes to skincare?

Sunday Lately, 8

February 22, 2015

Man what a week.  I ended up taking a day off on Friday to recharge myself.  I get 17 days of paid time off per year, and while most of it will be spent going to other people’s weddings later this year, I will fully enjoy each of my 17 days.

I’m not usually the person who just takes time off, but working in customer service is draining.  You need to charge your batteries so you can fully give to others again.  I was running on empty for a while between going back and forth to the hospital, shoveling, etc.

What's happening lately?

This week is a continuation of the themes from Sunday Lately 3.  I’m not sure if anything is still the same or matches up, but here’s what we’ve got this week…

Dwelling

I’ve been thinking a lot about my father’s upcoming surgery a lot.  It’s his fourth in under two years.

Helping

I’ve been lucky to have neighbors who are helping me this week.  There’s been a lot of snow during the day and I have been coming home to a freshly cleared driveway.  Bless the snow angels who are helping me out.  I’ll pay back the acts of kindness with cookies and Oreo biscotti.

Forgetting

To get my tax stuff together.  I really have to get on that.  I hate having to get that together because I always think that I’m forgetting something.  I try to keep my receipts separate during the year, but without fail, I end up running around and printing things out, leaaving things in the wrong place, etc.

Switching

From coffee to tea.  Some days.  Not always.  But I try.

I know I should drink more water, but I just don’t want to drink something cold in the winter, so I end up drinking a lot of coffee because that is my go-to.  I get up, walk around at work, and just naturally find myself by the Keurig.

Relying

I’m still relying on Jonathan.  He’s been fantastic.  It was wonderful to spend an extra day together this week.  I’ve been relying on phone calls to my mom a lot this week.  They’re long and there are a few deep conversations, but it’s mostly a distraction from the suckiness of everything, which is so necessary.

And my aunts, too.  They have been so helpful with my father in the hospital.  It’s unfortunate that he’s surrounded entirely by women with no manly break in the action.

What have you been up to lately?

Five things to prepare for 30 Days of Lists success

February 20, 2015

I have a shocking confession: I planned ahead.  The past two times I participated in 30 Days of Lists, I had no idea what vessel would store my magnificent lists.  In September, I pretty much stored them on Post It Notes until the end of the month when I decided to write them on Project Life cards and hold them together with binder rings.  And in December, I bound my own book again with PL cards, but I didn’t have it ready in time.

Five things to prep for 30 Days of Lists success. Get your PL cards and rukristin stamps!

So this time, I’m planning ahead.  As I mentioned before, I ordered the perfect little notebook from rukristin and I’m excited to fill it up with lists throughout March.  If you’ve never listed before, or you have but are looking for inspiration, here are five things to gather before you start listing.

A notebook / paper

If you register early for #30Lists, you will get a digital scrapbook kit.  While it’s so cute, I love the tactile element to crafting.  Cutting things out, finding the right layout, adding embellishments.  So I need a good base for my work.

Like I said, I’ve used all sorts of bases, from plain PL cards to Post Its.  Whatever you want, make sure that you have it handy when March starts so you can jump right in and start sharing your lists with the world.

Something to write with

I write my lists with Sharpie pens and my list titles/prompts with a regular Sharpie marker.  love Sharpie pens.  Any Sharpie product pretty much is steak sauce in my book, but the pens are great.  They’re bold, they glide nicely, last for ages, and super thin so you can doodle in the margins.

I like to grab a few colors that coordinate.  In September, I stuck with a black/white theme with pops of purple and pink.  So I grabbed Sharpies in various shades that would work together.

But you may want a plain black pen, colored pencils, ink and feather…whatever.

Washi tape

I’m a little late to the washi party, but I’m all in now.  Thank the lawd I have a Pat Catan’s close to me so I don’t have to fork out $5 per roll.  I’m also a fan of the Target dollar section for finding things like that.  They have (had?) surprisingly cute washi tape for a buck.  Yessir.

You can't scrapbook or makes 30 Days of Lists books without washi tape.

In December, I didn’t have to add many embellishments because of the paper, but I did add in some stamping and some washi tape elements.  In September, my lists were all embellished with washi tape.  I like the pop that washi tape gives my books without having to sacrifice writing space.

Fancy scissors

Someone help me with the proper name for these things.  I love them for adding a pretty boarder around my scrapbook pages or cutting washi tape instead of tearing it for a more elegant feel.

Other stuff

Embellish away!  Ribbons, decorative tape, stickers, stamps, patterned paper…these are your memories and your book, so make it how you want it to look.

I can’t wait to start the March 30 Days of Lists and for once, I will be ready for it!  Are you going to join the the list making?

What essentials do you have on hand for scrapbooking?

Creative Closet: Polka Dotted Polka Dots

February 17, 2015

Polka dots are amazing.  That said, I don’t have many items with polka dots.  I usually gravitate towards things that are a little more plain (blah) and add lots of accessories on top.  Or I add fun tights (and here I do both).

This past weekend, I needed something that would keep me warm but would also be theatre-appropriate.  I joined Jonathan on an outing to the ballet with some of his trivia friends.

Old Navy Polka Dot sweater dressChloe and Isabel Heirloom Chain + Pavé Convertible Necklace

When I saw this dress, I was instantly drawn to it.  First, it’s gray.  We all know how much I love me some gray things.  Second, it’s a sweater-dress.  Perfect for winter.  Third, it was a cool pattern!  Usually, polka dots are smaller and closer together.  I love that this is a little more “graphic” with it’s dottiness and less like a repeating pattern.

Polka dot sweater dress for winter

Dress: Old Navy | Sweater: one of a kind made for me! | Tights: Target | Boots: Michael Kors | Necklace: Chloe and Isabel

Of course, I had to add on a fun necklace.  I love the orbs of sparkle in here and they reflect the dots in the outfit.

I was going to wear booties so you could see more of the pattern in the tights, but it was cold, so I was going for as much body coverage as possible.  For that purpose, I love these boots.  I found them for a mad steal at an end-of-season sale.

My favorite part of this outfit is the sweater.  My mom made this for me and it fits perfectly without her measuring it against my body while she was making it.

Make a statement with polka dots and Chloe and IsabelLet me emphasize her talents.. She lives in Virginia.  I live in Pennsylvania.  And she knit a sweater that fits just based upon knowing my shoulder span.  Insane.

It was freezing when I was taking pictures, so that’s why we only have a couple of shots.  Props to Jonathan for standing outside with me and taking pictures.  He was wearing a coat, gloves, hat, ear wraps, scarf and still complaining that he was cold, though!  Men… (Thanks, sweetie!)

Side note: where does “polka dot” come from?  Also, does it start to look wrong the more you write/say it?  Because I’m over here like “polka dots…poka dots…poke-a dots…wait what’s right anymore?”
