Be a Better…Organizer

June 11, 2015

I have a hard time letting go of things.  If there’s a possibility of saving it, I will.  (Just ask all of my DIY projects.  I’m the queen of saying, “I can make that instead of buying it,” buying the supplies, then never making it.)  So I have to practice great restraint when I try to get rid of items that no longer serve me.

Everyone has heard “If you haven’t used it in a year, get rid of it,” or, “If it was in the back of the closet, clearly you don’t remember you have it, so get rid of it.”  But I have a different set of criteria when I’m organizing.  I think they help me to be better organizer.  I don’t know if anyone who has been in my house would agree, but I say it works for me!

Not everyone is born with an organizational gene. Some people are just messy or hold on to things. I have 5 questions that will help you to be an organizer.

When I need to organize and pare down, I ask myself these five questions.

Can this be used for its intended purpose?

At some point, I adopted an Alton Brown-ian philosophy that everything I bring into my house should have multiple purposes.  If you don’t know, he has an adage, “The only uni-tasker in the kitchen should be a fire extinguisher,” meaning everything else should do at least two tasks.

If it can be used for its intended purpose, and you still have use for that intended purpose, keep it.  Just make sure it has a place to live and you put it back in that place.

Can I do something with it?

This is the question I struggle with the most.  I feel so bad getting rid of something just because I’ve upgraded or no longer am using something for its intended purpose.  If you’re looking at something saying, “Well, I have a new wine rack, so I don’t need this old one anymore, but it’s good so I don’t want to get rid of it…” see if it can fit elsewhere.

For a long time, I used a 12-slot wine rack as a shoe organizer.  It was small and compact and it provided some extra storage space on top, too.

That said, if you can’t re-purpose it naturally and it would be an even bigger hassle to tinker with it to turn it into something else, get rid of it.

Would someone else want it?

On the other hand, if it’s a good piece and you just don’t have a need for it, see if someone else wants it.  Put it online, ask your friends, or do what I did and send an office-wide email saying, “Hey, I have a houseful of stuff that’s gotta go.  If you need something, let me know!”  I felt so much better knowing that items that were perfectly good just no longer use to me would be taken home with someone who needs it.

They save money, we both get to practice Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…win-win, right?

Do I have space for it if I save it?

This is a biggie…  Let’s say your wine rack is perfectly good, but you don’t use it anymore and no one wants/needs it.  Maybe you want to try to re-purpose it elsewhere, but it’ll take some time to figure that out.  Do you have space to store it?

Trying to pare down my father’s house is proving such a challenge and storage space is going to be at a premium if and when he moves.  This is a big question when trying to figure out which serving platters are staying or going.

Do I already have these?

Okay, I know I can’t judge here.  I have backup pairs of my favorite jeans so when one wears out, I can jump right into a new pair.  But, if you’re looking at something and debating whether to get rid of it, see if you already have something that does a similar job.  If so, keep the one you like better and try to let go of the others.

No one will get me out of my gray t-shirts, though; yes, I need multiple pairs.

What are your organizational rules?

Favorite Quote, Part Two

June 10, 2015

Today’s post is going to be nice and short to make up for yesterday’s sprawling post.  To be a good quote, I think it has to be short, simple, impactful, and incredibly direct..everything this sentence is not.  To be a favorite quote, it has to carry power and meaning to the reader / person whose quote is their favorite.

Last month, I really wanted to share Baron Batch‘s line, “Be aware when your time is up,” because it was perfect for the day I shared it.  While I absolutely love that saying, another quote that I always come back to this one by Abraham Lincoln:

Whatever you are, be a good one. - Abraham Lincoln

Whatever you are, be a good one.

I always liked that saying from Abraham Lincoln.  Whatever you want to be, just make sure you’re really damn good at it.

It’s like what I heard Jenny Blake say during my Nicole Antoinette No BS Lab podcast binge.  She wrote a post about having a life purpose.  She says if you need a life purpose, take this one: Be as helpful as you can to as many people as you can.

Jenny is just about echoing Lincoln here.  Whatever you choose to do with your day, make sure it’s done to the best of your abilities.  However you choose to make yourself useful, be really useful.

Spread this around as far as you can, so long as it’s still doing good for someone else.

Just don’t spread it too thin.  If it’s too thin, it doesn’t do anyone any favors.  And when you get to the point where you’re sacrificing your doing good in the name of profitability, that’s when you need to turn back around and remember where you started.  That’s a very Dale Partridge thing to say, but I’ll get there later.

What are you doing today to be a good one?

Blogger. Maker. Mover. Shaker.

June 9, 2015

There are sooo many things I want to say today and sooo little time.  I don’t want you guys scrolling forever, but I am so in love with this shirt I’m wearing today and I couldn’t narrow down the photos.  And I have a Project:Food Budget update/recap of what I spent last week.

Out of all of the jobs I’ve had, blogger is one of my favorites.  It’s probably tied for my Yelp internship in terms of fun-ness.  I mean, I get to talk about whatever I want, take cool pictures, have a community of great people.  And I get to meet some awesome people.

Handmade Escapade 'Blogger, Maker, Mover, Shaker' tank. So stinkin' cute!

One of these awesome people makes this awesome shirt.

Can I just gush about it for a hot minute?  When Katy texted me a picture of it, I seriously had to have it.

One, I am totally a blogger, a maker, a mover, and a shaker.  At least, I try to shake it.  My TSwizzle moves need a little help (see picture below).  And I could use a little reminder to shake things up.

Two, it is so freakin’ cute!

So then I got my hands on it and was even more in love with it.  It’s insanely comfortable, the font and spacing is just right, and the color is a gorgeous, summer-sky blue.

There are other colors, too, of course.  I had to restrain myself from getting it in gray.  Everything I own is gray.  Then I looked in my closet and was like, “Damn I have a lot of blue, too,” so this tank fits right in.

I love the tank version of this because the shoulders are nice and wide and the body is long and doesn’t ride up.  I know Katy makes sure of that in her designs.

And how awesome is this hat with the shirt?  Katy also makes these rad hats.  I’m not a hat person, but I just had to have this.

My rocksbox was in and also perfectly coordinated with the blue.

Rocksbox accessories

Y’all know I love wearing accessories to fancy things up, so this is something I’d definitely wear out to a fun event in Pittsburgh (or a blogging conference, if you know of any coming up…)  I knew it would be perfect to wear in all different ways, casual or a little fancier.

What’s the most worn color in your closet?

Linking up with Life Could Be A Dream and The Modern Tulip for The Creative Closet.

Many thanks to Katy, who gifted me this shirt in exchange for some air time on my blog.  Girl, I was already gonna talk about it before you asked me to!  It’s awesome and y’all need this shirt!

Sticking to a food budget is hard, but I love the accountability with Project:Food BudgetLast week, I spent a total of $40.81 at Giant Eagle.  I always look for the in-store specials, use in-store and manufacturer coupons when I can, and I buy things on sale and freeze them.  I have such a bad problem with that, though, because I always worry that my freezer will run low and then I’ll have to buy regular-price chicken breasts.  Oh the horror!

I ended up with a lot of produce and dairy – enough to fill 75% of my shopping bags.  The other bag had some canned tuna, coconut oil, and Goldfish crackers – I love them for lunch snacks.

I did allow myself a splurge item at Target and it is S’more Oreos.  I couldn’t help it and got two packages..

I know, if I’m going to be eating s’mores, I probably should actually make them myself and not have chemically processed s’more flavor in Oreo form, but dang-nabit they are amazing and I couldn’t help myself.

So my grand total for last week’s food spending is $46.79 – that is $3.21 under budget.

I have quite a bit of produce left over.  I didn’t touch my vidalia onion yet and I have most of my tomatoes, bananas, and onions left.

I have to do a better job at looking up recipes, making a thorough list of what I need, and prepping what I can ahead of time.  I’m really in a rut when it comes to dinner.  I come home and just make something simple like pasta with veggies and chicken or chicken sausage on autopilot.  Even tacos are a little too involved at times.

Oh and can we talk about how I couldn’t get cheese last week?  I grocery shop on Tuesday mornings because I don’t start work until later and hell if I’m spending time on Sunday morning in lines if I don’t have to.  Tuesdays are also when they choose to rip out and reorganize the cheese section.

I was about to start shopping from the carts piled with cheese they took out of the cases.  There goes taco night.  Tacos are worthless without cheese/something creamy to cut the spice.

I really want to venture to Trader Joe’s some time soon to compare prices on staple items.  I’m also very anxious for my garden to start producing so I can eat tomatoes and peppers that taste like tomatoes and peppers again.

And the zucchini bread I’ll make…and grilled zucchini with feta…and oh the delicious fresh food right from my back yard will be so amazing.

Be Bold: NYC New York Color Big Bold Review

June 8, 2015

I’ve been trying to get up earlier in the morning to get a jump on the day.  I’m not sure how well it’s really working, but I love having more time to allow myself to transition into the day.  I don’t know about you, but I always end up running five minutes late when I think I have so much time.  Y’know, you think you have more time than you do and a situation were, “Oh I have so much time!” turns into, “Oh I hope there isn’t much traffic, I’m so late.”

So my morning routine has to be pretty quick and idiot-proof.  This includes makeup.

I was so excited when I heard that Influenster was sending me a #NYCBigBold voxbox.  I love how Katy made her box sound and I was running out of liquid eye liner – win win.

NYC New York Color Big Bold Mascara and Eyeliner Review -- such good stuff!

The lasting power on the Big Bold eyeliner and mascara is quite impressive.  Trust me, I’ve been putting it through its paces.  Long days at work, lunchtime walks, the works.  I even wore it yesterday during the yard sale and only after I was sitting outside for 8 hours in heat and sweaty, swampy conditions did I notice a teeensy bit of flaking on the mascara and some creasing on the thicker part of the liner.  I almost expected raccoon eyes that would scare away the customers, but no raccoon eyes for this gal.

NYC New York Color Big Bold mascara and liquid eyeliner - must try!

I mean, I’m totally impressed with that, especially considering NYC isn’t one of the more expensive brands in the drugstore.  And we all know expensive makeup equals better makeup.  Totally.

The only thing I’m not a total fan of is the shape of the eyeliner applicator.  I’m used to a long, flexible applicator like L’Oreal Lineur Intense or Mary Kay liquid liner.

Fantastic liquid eye liner - L'Oreal, NYC New York Color, and Mary Kay. Love it all and they last sooo well!

what does totally rock about the eyeliner applicator, though, is that you really can get a super-thin, tight-to-the-lashes line for just a little definition in your look or you can really draw it on and make a bold statement.  I want this to come in other colors!

I’m really starting to see NYC makeup in a new light.  I would always buy their nail polish at Target when I was in high school because it was cheap and they have such a variety of colors, but I never tried the color cosmetics.  After the lipstick in the Frosty voxbox and this set of eye products, I’m almost at a full face with NYC and I’m super cool with that.

What’s your favorite summer-proof eyeliner and mascara?

Influenster sent me the #NYCBigBold VoxBox for review.  My opinion can’t be bought and it sure isn’t fake – these are my genuine feelings!

Sunday Lately, 23

June 7, 2015

Man, what a week.  Today is part two of my father’s moving yard sale.  Yesterday went pretty well but the weather wasn’t our friend.  It was cloudy and windy.  Only just as we were wrapping up for the day did the weather get better.  Oh of course.  Thanks to Jonathan, I had company and laughter throughout the day, though.  I’m a lucky gal.

Today is also the end of the first week of Be A Better Blogger with myself, Katy, and Meghan.  Check out next week’s posts and link up with us!

21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon

Dwelling

Actually, I don’t know what I’ve been dwelling on.  It’s been a busy week and I don’t think I have time to dwell on anything.  It’s been quite a roller coaster this week at work which leaves little time to focus on anything at home aside from eating dinner and sleeping.

Helping

I want to keep up with commenting more on the Be A Better Blogger posts, but damn you guys are just doing so great, I can’t keep up.  But I’m still going to be helping any way I can for supporting and uplifting other bloggers in this community.

I’m also helping with a yard sale.  Yay for helping.

Forgetting

I really need to keep up with my garden better.  Like I was saying before, It’s been quite a ride this week and I’m totally using that as an excuse for not weeding my garden.  Plus, weeding is the worst.  If anyone wants to help me, I’ll gladly share the harvest with you!

Switching

I’m trying to work on rotating my skincare masks.  I have quite a bit of Cupcake (from Lush) that I have to use up, but I want to use my other masks.  One of my favorites, Steep Clean, is getting lonely waiting for me to work through Lush products!  I really have too much makeup.I need to sell off some makeup.RelyingMy family has been relying on me a lot lately and I in turn have been relying on my friends.  I’m very thankful for the group of people I have in my life, especially the ones who stick around through the screwed up moments, the late night freak outs, the wonderful highs, and the general life-ness of everything.

What have you been up to lately?
